PURPOSE
Project Change is a term-long provincial competition enabling BC tourism students to become leaders and agents for positive change in the world. Being an influencer, being environmentally and socially conscious, and getting things done are all characteristics expected of today’s industry leaders.
THE TASK
Working individually or in groups (max. 6), students identify a community, then create and develop an effective social or environmental stewardship project. There are only three guidelines:
PROJECT CHANGE COMMUNITIES
The community (containing at least 20 people) can be a social, educational, occupational, religious, recreational or other group that shares common characteristics or interests.
SPECIFIC MEASURABLE RESULTS
Projects must be designed to impact the community in specific measurable ways. For example, students can choose to track dollars raised, people in attendance, names on a petition, behaviour changed, waste diverted, energy saved, trees planted, or car trips avoided, among others. By measuring specific impacts, students will see the tangible difference they make in the world.
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is aimed at BC tourism management, tourism and hospitality management, adventure tourism and culinary program students–however, student teams from any discipline are encouraged to participate. Submissions must be supported by an instructor or program administrator. Program coordinators/ Instructors are encouraged to incorporate Project Change: BC Campus Challenge into their course-of-studies in the 2011 fall term/semester (September- December). The project works well as a major assignment in a related course, or can be creatively included in other ways. It’s up to you!

THE FINE PRINT
Project Change: BC Campus Challenge is a provincial competition inspired by a project of the same name initiated by Joe Kelly at Capilano University. It has generated a high level of student engagement, some very inspiring projects, and significant media interest. This provincial initiative also builds on the 2008 Whistler Accord signed by BC tourism/hospitality educators–to work cooperatively to get more students involved in climate change and sustainable tourism issues.
LinkBC: the tourism & hospitality education network is pleased to be a supporter of this provincial competition and encourages all colleges/universities in the LinkBC network to think of ways to get your students involved! www.linkbc.ca
AtBC: The Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC is pleased to support Project Change as an opportunity for learners of all backgrounds to create positive change in their communities. The competition’s sustainability theme is a foundation of Aboriginal values. www.aboriginalbc.com
